DARPA - Grand Challenge

DARPA, the U.S. Defence Department's research outfit, is hosting a Mad Max like dessert race from Los Angeles to Las Vegas early next year called the Grand Challenge. 20 or more (the total number of allowed participants is being debated) automated ground vehicles will have to make their way over a 300-mile dessert course in a specified period of time. The winner gets $1 million dollars and it probably won't stop with that. Cool. Add a few tanks in the middle of the course (manned by eager reservists) and this event could topple the WWF.
