Toyota Land Cruiser Association

In the 1970's, Bob "Snake Eyes" Garret envisioned a national (U.S.A.) 4 wheel drive organization devoted to the Toyota LandCruiser. In 1976, Bob's vision "took root" with the formation of the founding chapter of the Toyota Land Cruiser Association ... Toyota Land Cruiser Association Ventura County.

TLCA's growth was initially slow, with new chapters based almost exclusively in California, U.S.A.. Knowledge of TLCA spread primarily by word of mouth, TLCA events and a published newsletter Toyota Trails. Since then TLCA events have spread and are held annually throughout the US. Toyota Trails has developed into one of the finest 4 wheel drive publications anywhere.

The year 2001 marked TLCA's celebration of its 25th anniversary. It is a tribute to its dedicated members and the hundreds of volunteer leaders who have nurtured the association over the years to what it is today.

IH8MUD.COM

Time for another landcruiser.commentary post. On-line forums and other enthusiast supported websites are invaluable resources for shady-tree mechanics - I don't know how I'd keep my FJ60 running without help from the on-line community. IH8MUD.com is the Land Cruiser forum I frequent the most. The site is an invaluable resource for any Land Cruiser enthusiast. Check it out.

Konfabulator

Konfabulator
I've always been a fan of applications that let you spiff up the Windows GUI - that's why I was surprised to learn about Konfabulator - a cool GUI enhancer produced by a company that was recently purchased by Yahoo!.

I installed Konfabulator on one of my machines and it's a pretty neat Widget platform. There are hundreds of quality Widgets available and the core-application is now free thanks to Yahoo! It's a bit of a memory hog (a common complaint with applications like this) but it's well designed and fairly robust. Worth a look if you feel like spiffing up your GUI. Konfabulator is available for both the Windows and MAC operating systems.

Communication Technology - Too much of a good thing?

Instant Messaging, E-mail, Phones, Blackberrys - is it too much of a good thing? Another good ZDNET article - Driven to distraction by technology - talking about communication technologies and the negative impact they can have on our productivity. Did you the typical office worker is interrupted every three minutes and that it takes eight to get to a really creative state?

Windows Vista

Windows Vista
The next version of the Windows Operating System, code-named "Longhorn," was "officially" dubbed Windows Vista today. Watch the "Longhorn" naming announcement video.

Microsoft is trying to keep the Windows Vista hype to a mininum - some analysts think this is an effort to protect the Windows XP revenue stream by not diverting focus from XP to an OS that won't be available until late in 2006. Good idea.

I came across a sharp list of performance promises for Windows Vista that I think represents some of the best marketing I've seen in regards to the future OS. Why? It's benefit oriented and I can immediately see the impact it will have on my Windows computing experience.

Peroformance Promises:

  • launch applications 15 percent faster than Windows XP does
  • boot PCs 50 percent faster than they boot currently and will allow PCs to resume from standby in two seconds
  • allow users to patch systems with 50 percent fewer reboots required
  • reduce the number of system images required by 50 percent
  • enable companies to migrate users 75 percent faster than they can with existing versions of Windows.

Additional Resources:

Gawker Media publishes a great collection of Blogs - I personally love GizModo - but when does a Blog become just another website? Are Corporations and Media Aggregators damaging the soul of this social computing movement by publishing websites under the Blog banner?

Blogregators

A Blogregator consumes Blogs that make too much noise in the Blogosphere. After the Blog is consumed it starts to loose its identity - it normalizes to fit the standards of the Blogregator. Eventually the Blog dies and it becomes a Website managed by producers, editors, marketing managers, more editors, and a graphics designer or two. Bloggers; beware the Blogregator.

Example Blogregator: weblogsinc

Google Mashups

Google Maps
It's interesting; Google Maps (maps.google.com) is generating a whole new type of social computing. Google, by developing an easy-to-use API for their mapping technology, created the world of Google Maps Mashups. I'm just starting to explore this area but at 1st glance it's interesting.

HotOrNot - HotOrNot + Google Maps = Hot People by Zip Code. HotOrNot is a great example of a social computing application of the technology.

GMap Pedometer - record your running or walking distance. Not what I'd call a social computing application of the technology - but still cool.

Google Maps Mania - An unofficial Google Maps blog tracking the websites, ideas and tools being influenced by Google Maps.

Urinal Targets

UrinalInnovation
I stumbled into this post on Seth Godin's Blog that caught my attention to the point where I actually looked at the Trackback log. Creative innovation like the Urinal Target (did I make that up?) is inspiring - it sparks the Entrepreneur in me. The product opportunities here are amazing to the point where I really should be keeping this stream of thought to myself. Procter and Gamble would make millions selling Urinal Targets in the U.S. alone. Can you see it? Or, should I say - can you hit it? [Pick your enemy] Urinal Target, Incredibles Urinal Targets, G.W.B. Urinal Targets, the possibilities are endless.

Did some more research and apparently the toilets in the Schipol Airport (Amsterdam) get noticed bit it stops there. Makes me wonder why somebody isn't selling Urinal Targets that can be applied to existing toilets.

BabyWunder Transparent Toilet

Babywunder

Don't miss that "magic moment" - Babywunder Deluxe. Do NOT buy one of these transparent toilets for your child - he or she will forever be disappointed with toilets that aren't transparent - normal toilets. I guess you could get a head-start on numbers by counting raisins on the log ; ) I bet Wonder Woman used something like this.

Motorola RAZRBerry

RAZRBerry

Well, it isn't actually called the RAZRBerry - it's going to be called 'Franklin' - but don't let the lame name ruin it for you. Motorola's RAZRBerry might just kickstart the puttering SmartPhone category. I hope they don't call it 'Franklin' - that brings back bad memories of bad dictionary like devices. Basic SPECs are available here and there but it's all just speculation at this point.
