Walle-e

Wall-e I had the opportunity to see Pixar's new animated movie WALL-E over the July 4th weekend. The movie was an absolute pleasure to watch for me and my kids. Hancock was good but WALL-E was better.

WALL-E has it all - a great story, amazing animation, great sound, robot love, and creativity packed into every second. WALL-E is also a delivery platform for an important message. The movie makes it very clear that if we don't do something to change our "Buy Everything Large" way of living that we're going to destroy our planet. The movie makers aren't subtle about delivering this message. Earth is a trash pit no longer capable of supporting life, humans are so large they can't walk anymore, we've lost the ability to read and communicate, and robots have to do just about everything for us. The message is presented in a fun way, targeted more at the adults in the theater, so my kids didn't quite get it but it gave us something to talk about later. It's a scary message and I think the timing for it is perfect. I applaud the makers of WALL-E for using their success to get this message out. I just hope people listen.

SIDE NOTE: I wonder if the makers of the movie signed-off on the cheap WALL-E watches the theaters were giving out to the kids opening weekend? I'm guessing that more than 1/2 of them are already in the trash headed for a landfill.

Iron Maiden 757

My 1st concert experience - Iron Maiden at the Cow Palace in Daily City CA. I was frankly surprised to find out that the guys are still touring and in a big way. Good post over on the Laughing Squid about their customized 757 Ed Force One. Bruce Dickinson, the lead rocker, is the pilot. Can you believe that! blogTO has more pictures of the plane up in Canada. Oh, you can book a fligh on Ed Force One if you feel like flying with Bruce.

Eddie Vedder - Into The Wild

Eddie Vedder - Into TheWild

My high school days blew past me with Pearl Jam in the driver's seat so Eddie Vedder, Pear Jam's lead singer, is firmly rooted in my heart strings. A couple of weeks ago I was reminded of just how much I love his vocal work when I went to see Into the Wild with a good friend of mine. Vedder laid down tracks for the movie exclusively (as far as I can tell) and it made the movie just that much better. A great soundtrack for a great movie - I highly recommend both. I promptly downloaded it from the iTunes music store. Thanks for making that easy Steve.

Trunk Monkey

I love the Trunck Monkey series of advertisements developed by Sean Sosik-Hamor and Subaru. Guaranteed to make you laugh a little. Here's a complete list of "monkey" videos.

Suburban Auto Group released a series of Trunk Monkey Super Bowl commercials for 2003 and 2004. The ad agency that produced these commercials is R/West. Although the Suburban Auto Group popularized the Trunkmonkey with their Trunk Monkey commercials, Sean Sosik-Hamor and the Subaru community were responsible for creating the concept back in 2000. -- trunkmonkey.com

Drug-Resistant Staph

MRSA

Drug-Resistant Staph is getting a lot of attention these days. The recent death of a 17-year-old high school student in VA pushed the nasty bacteria back into the spotlight. MRSA, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, is now an enemy of the state, like a Bin Laden, and on the minds of most anxious parents and primetime news show producers. The New York Times put together a good MRSA overview yesterday - Drug-Resistant Staph: What You Need to Know.

Now would be a good time to invest in companies that deal in anti-bacterial hand wash products. Now would be a bad time to be a Pediatrician or a school custodian. Wash your hands, don't touch the door handle in public bathrooms, and don't touch other people ; ) Most don't wash their hands in the bathroom.

My 2007 Tech Predictions

  • Windows Vista will be hugely popular.
  • Apple's growth in the personal computer space will slow as a result of Vista's success and the next generation hardware that will support it.
  • RIA apps., powered by WPF/WPFE and similar technologies, will start to get traction as the line between client-side software and web-based software continues to soften.
  • Yahoo! will continue to loose momentum as Google and nimble Web X.0 companies continue to eat away at it.
  • Wi-fi everywhere and geo-based advertising will start to catch hold and Google's early efforts in this space will pay off - securing their dominance in the ad space for the near future.
  • Microsoft will establish multi-media beach-heads in more American living rooms this year using the xBox 360 platform - re-configuring the gaming system into a Media Center replacement via free updates as unsuspecting users sleep.
  • Apples's cell phone will change the way we think about cell phones and cell service forever.

Read what everybody else is predicting for 2007.

NOTE: I reserve the right to add to this list for the remainder of this week ; )

The Omen - how do you let your kid star in something like this?

The Omen
The Omen, a supernatural thriller staring the antichrist himself, opened 06/06/06. This is the remake of the 1976 original starring Gregory Peck. I haven't seen the movie yet but watching the trailer recently, it occurred to me, what kind of parent lets their seven year old star in a film like The Omen? How does this not mess with the kid's head?

NOTE: If your child is born 06/06/06   / bushisanticrhist.com

Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick, a seven year old 1st grader from New York was selected by director John Moore for his ability to "look evil." Jim Fitzpatrick, Seamus' father, also has this ability and has put it to use in a few scary flicks of his own 1, 2, 3. Jim has a starring role in the upcoming  The Belly of the Beast Satan flick. Can you imagine the conversations Jim and Seamus must have? "Dad, I just can't get the demon voice right. How do I make it sound really evil."

I'm sure Jim is very proud of his son and I'm sure they have a lot to talk about but is a role like this really in Seamus' best interests? Maybe the family has good sense of humor about it, maybe Seamus is super smart and this kind of thing just roles off him, but as the parent of a four year old I can't see this not messing with the kid's head. Getting "into character" at seven years old and back out probably isn't as easy as it sounds. Go kill your "pretend" parents Seamus and look evil doing it! Take 1, Take 2, Take 3 - can't be easy to just put behind you at seven. I'll end this post with a quote from Seamus' grandmother Margaret Davey (80).

'I know there are parts where I'll keep my eyes closed,'' Davey says. ''He kills his mother and his father, but at least he doesn't kill his grandmother.'' [source]

Have a beer ...

At a world brewing convention in the States, the CEOs of various brewing organizations retired to the bar at the end of each day's conference.

Bruce, CEO of Fosters, shouted to the Barman: "In 'Strylya, we make the best bladdy beer in the world, so pour me a bladdy Fosters, mate."

Bob, CEO of Budweiser, calls out next: "In the States, we brew the finest beers of the world, and I make the king of them all, gimme a Bud."

Hans, CEO of Lowenbrau, steps up next: "In Germany, ve invented das beer, Ferdamnt. Give me ein Lowenbrau, das ist der real King of beers, danke."

Paddy, CEO of Guinness, steps forward: "Barman, would ya give me a diet coke with ice and lemon. Thanks."

The others stare at him in stunned silence, amazement written all over their faces. Eventually Bruce asks: "Are you not going to have a Guinness, Pat?" Paddy replies "Well, if you fookin' pansies aren't drinkin', then neither am I!"

Japan/Tokyo - "Hard Gay" Comedian

Tokyo - Hard Gay
I dropped in on a post titled "Who is Hard Gay?" while visiting the ODK. Apparently, this guy runs/dances around Tokyo trying to loosen everybody up a little. Funny stuff.
"Hard Gay is a faux homosexual that dresses in stereotypical tight leather clothing and runs around the streets of Tokyo performing acts of "social improvement" while thrusting his hips and yelling "Woooo!". Confused? Maybe it's best if you just see for yourself..." - ODK

Watch the video (WMV) - really, watch it.

Keeping a BLOG current is a lot of work - more than I can commit to at this point and that's obvious when you look at how consistent my post activity is. Just discovered geocaching - Cosmo and I are really enjoying the hunt. It's a great activity for families and a good way to combine technology (portable GPS required) with outdoor time. We found one cache already and we might try for our second after school today. I'm PNWGPS on geocaching.com.

Sideways

Sideways
Movie: Sideways
Official web site
Yahoo! Movies
My Netflix rating: 4 stars (really liked it)
Apple.com trailer:
IMDB for Sideways

I saw an excellent movie this weekend at the Bijou called Sideways starring Paul Giamatti and Thomas Haden – it’s got my recommendation.

Short story – two middle aged guys, Miles (Giamatti) and Jack (Haden), drive up to California’s wine country the week before Jack’s wedding for a wine-tasting, bachelor party, bonding, kind of thing and not surprisingly end up in all kinds of trouble. Miles is a washed-up and depressed writer that works as a high-school English teacher to get by and Jack is a washed-up x-soap actor that’s trying to save himself by marrying into a wealthy family – they both need help.

I enjoyed the movie for its scenery, sharp dialog, rich character development, and wealth of juicy wine tasting dialog. Miles is wine connoisseur of sorts so there’s a lot of wine tasting going on and a quarter of the dialog is dedicated to just lines about wine. Not knowing a lot about wine – it kept me interested.

So go see it and bring a bottle of wine with you – just not a merlot.

Amazing Race - Jonathan Poor Excuse for Husband

This year is the 1st year my wife and I have watched the CBS TV show titled The Amazing Race. This is the 6th season for the show and it's growing on us. If you're interested you can learn more about the show by visiting its website.

We do however have one issue with the 6th amazing race - one of the teams, Jonathan and Victoria. Jonathan is a poor excuse for a husband - a poor excuse for a man. From the beginning he was verbally abusive. It eventually became clear (through body language) that in the real world he most likely physically abuses his wife. Who pretends to punch their wife? But Jonathan went too far in episode five.

In the final leg of episode five as Jonathan and Victoria battled Freddy and Kendra (engaged models) in a foot race to the Pit Stop Jonathan just about knocked his wife to the ground by punching the backpack that was firmly attached to her back. Actually, it looked like he punched her in the shoulder but after a quick review with the Tivo it was clear that he punched her backpack. One way or the other he crossed the line. Jonathan is a weak man that obviously has image problems and a host of other psychological problems.

I think CBS executives had a responsibility to draw a line at spousal physical abuse - Jonathan and Victoria should have been disqualified from the race. Obviously filming for the season is already complete and from what I've read on the fan sites they were not disqualified. This guy wants to have kids! I can't blame Victoria for not giving them to him. Run Victoria.

Andy Milonakis - Crispy New Freestyle

Andy Milonakis recently experienced a few seconds in the national spotlight for his freestyle rap, Crispy New Freestyle. At first, I thought to myself that this 12 year old would soon be in foster care (after his parents saw the video) but with a little help from Google I started to realize that this Milonakis kid is a trash-media mogul of sorts. Take a look at Angry Naked Pad, Andy has produced numerous videos. I even heard rumor that he's closer to 27 years old. Strange, the flash-pan celebrities the Internet incubates.
